Referral Biography
Dr. CJ Powers is the former Director of Psychology Training at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI), in Salt Lake City, UT. He left HMHI in December 2023 to start a private practice, with an office located on Foothill Drive. He received his PhD in Clinical Child Psychology from the Pennsylvania State University, and completed his internship and post-doctoral training at Geisinger Medical Center, in Danville, PA. Dr. Powers specializes in working with children, teenagers, and their families to treat mood disorders and behavior problems. He is skilled in a variety of evidence-based approaches and frequently uses Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Dr. Powers is passionate about outreach and teaching. He supervised numerous interns in the internship program. He regularly appears in local media speaking about suicide prevention and mental health. Dr. Powers also helps train medical professionals in the hospital and provides outreach to the community.
Prior to becoming a psychologist, Dr. Powers worked as a geophysicist for the US Geological Survey and worked with children as a middle school teacher. When he is not at work, Dr. Powers is busy raising two children along with his wife, camping in the desert, climbing and skiing in the Wasatch mountains, and playing the ukulele.
