Course Overview

Americans are experiencing rapidly increasing levels of stress from social and political issues, leading to a variety of adverse mental health outcomes. This workshop will explore the complex relationship between sociopolitical stress, hope, and value-oriented community activity regarding mental health treatment. Special focus will be paid to the effectiveness of hope-building and political action as a means of treating the symptoms of political stress

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the complex relationship between political stress symptoms and interventions.  
  • Identify research-supported techniques for treating populations going through political stress. 
  • Describe strategies to help clients find value-aligned approaches to engage in their communities.

Presenter: Robert Ortega, Ph.D.

Overview:

Robert Ortega completed his BA at Georgetown University and his master’s at William James College. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oregon after completing an APA-accredited clinical internship at American University. He is currently in private practice at RIO Therapies, where he treats ADHD, OCD, and sociopolitical stressors among people in the greater Washington, D.C. area. Robert has published research in the field of critical consciousness, and his dissertation explored the relationship between political action behaviors and mental health symptoms.
